Pressing Flowers

Common roadside greenery presses beautifully, but always check list of endangered botanicals and poisonous plants before collecting in the wild. Mosses, berries,and single petals all press very well. The process of pressing is uncomplicated and requires no special equipment. Large books and telephone directories work well, but once you have used a flower press, it soon becomes invaluable. Gather the plants as they become available, and collect a large quantity to ensure a good selection while crafting. The perfect time for collecting is the dew has evaporated and before midday. When plants are at their driest and strongest. Absorbent paper, such as blotting paper or paper toweling, is essential for this process because it absorbs moistures and oils from the plant

Flower Tip

To protect pressed flowers and add fragrance, brush a light coat of melted, scented wax over plant surfaces. Perfumed votive candles are prefect for this purpose. Always meld candles in a double boiler.
